A Love Story Rolled in Sushi Rice/シャリが結んだラブストーリー
From Texas to Japan/テキサスから、日本へ
Some guests leave with memories.
Some guests leave with friendships.
And a very rare few leave with a story worth writing about.
Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming Chris and Olivia to my sushi experience in Japan.
Both are Americans from Texas who visited Japan together during their travels in Asia.
They came to learn how to make sushi.
At least, that’s what they told me.
But after spending time with them, I realized they were creating something much bigger than sushi.
They were creating a future together.
人によっては思い出を持ち帰る。
人によっては友情を持ち帰る。
そして、ごくまれに「物語」を持ち帰る人たちがいる。
先日、クリスさんとオリビアさんが私の寿司体験に参加してくれました。
お二人はテキサス出身のアメリカ人で、アジア旅行の途中に日本へ立ち寄ってくれました。
二人の目的は寿司作りを学ぶこと。
少なくとも最初はそうだったと思います。
しかし一緒に過ごしているうちに、二人が作っていたのは寿司だけではないと感じました。
それは二人の未来そのものだったのです。
From the beginning, Olivia showed an incredible natural talent for sushi making.
In fact, among all the guests I have taught over the years, I would easily place her in the top five.
Her movements were precise.
Her attention to detail was excellent.
And most importantly, she had the touch.
A sushi chef knows exactly what I mean.

Well…
Let’s just say he gave it his best shot. 🤪
オリビアさんは本当に寿司作りが上手でした。
これまで多くの海外ゲストを教えてきましたが、間違いなく歴代トップ5に入る才能の持ち主です。
動作が美しく、
理解が早く、
そして何より寿司を握る感覚が素晴らしかった。
職人なら分かる、あの感覚です。
一方クリスさんは……
まあ、一生懸命頑張っていました（笑）。
After the lesson ended, our day wasn’t quite finished.
They asked if I knew a good local bar.
I smiled.
Of course.
So we walked to a small hidden bar near the station, one of those places you would never discover unless a local took you there.
There we shared stories, laughter, and a few exceptional drinks.
A fine bourbon.
A shot of Lagavulin 16.
Olivia chose a glass of red wine.
We enjoyed the evening together.
To be honest, I may have introduced them to drinks that were a little more expensive than necessary.
But this was Japan.
And some memories deserve better than cheap whisky.
体験終了後、
二人から
「どこかおすすめのバーはありますか？」
と聞かれました。
もちろんあります。
せっかくなので駅近くの隠れ家的なバーへご案内しました。
そこで最高のバーボンを飲み、
ラガヴーリン16年を味わい、
オリビアさんは赤ワインを楽しみ、
私たちは一緒に楽しい夜を過ごしました。
正直、少し高いお酒を勧めすぎたかもしれません（笑）。
でも日本旅行です。
どうせなら記憶に残る一杯を飲んでほしい。
そう思いました。
What impressed me most was not their sushi.
Not the whisky.
Not even the conversation.
It was how naturally they enjoyed being together.
No performance.
No pretending.
Just two people genuinely happy in each other’s company.
And perhaps that is the finest ingredient of all.
私が最も印象に残ったのは、
寿司でもなく、
お酒でもなく、
会話でもありません。
二人が一緒にいることを心から楽しんでいたことです。
自然体で、
無理をせず、
お互いを大切にしている。
そんな雰囲気が伝わってきました。
そしてそれこそが人生で最も大切な「ネタ」なのかもしれません。

And if sushi making ever becomes difficult…
